Course Description

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is a multi-disciplinary field that focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of information technologies. In healthcare settings, HCI has been a key topic of discussion because of the number of errors and system failures attributed to the poor design, faulty implementation, and inadequate evaluation of health information technologies such as electronic health records systems. This course will introduce the HCI field with a focus on healthcare applications and systems.

In the course, we will be examining health information technologies from a user-centered design perspective. The course will cover three broad areas. First, students will learn about users, how to assess user needs, and describe user requirements. Second, students will learn about design and how to prototype systems and their features. Finally, students will learn different evaluation methods to assess the usability and usefulness of a system in an organization. Throughout this course, multiple exercises will help make concrete principles learned in this area, including a final group project.

A more detailed syllabus will be available shortly.
